Transport from SJO Airport to Monteverde
This article describes the four means of transportation to get from SJO Airport to Monteverde.
1. Driving (Car Rental):
Here it is the map to get from SJO Airport to Hotel El Bosque in Monteverde
The drive should take between 3 and 3.5 hours in total.
Keep in mind that 24KM of the road (from Guacimal to Santa Elena) are not paved.
This part can be quite bumpy during some parts of the road.
Take it easy and enjoy the ride.
PROS: You travel at your own pace…
CONS: Can be a bit rough if this is your first time driving in Costa Rica.
You will probably need a 4FW car from May through November (rainy season).
2. Public Bus:
Leaves San Jose city at 6:30 am and at 2:30 pm.
You need to take a taxi from SJO Airport to the terminal in San Jose city.
PROS: Very cheap (about $15 for the taxi and $6/Person for the bus).
CONS: It’s only available on the above 2 schedules.
It can be hot, uncomfortable and (sometimes even…) smelly…
It takes about 4 to 4.5 hours to get to Monteverde (because of the stops along the way).
3. Shared Shuttle:
Leaves the Airport at 8am and 2pm.
You simply walk out a couple of feet from the Airport exit to where they stop.
Normally costs around $50/Person. Just send an email to [email protected] to arrange this.
PROS: A lot more comfortable than the Public Bus. No need to travel to San Jose city.
CONS: Can’t wait for you if your flight is delayed which would leave no option but to stay for a night in San Jose or to take an Airport Taxi which is very expensive (about $300).
4. Private Transport:
A private driver will wait for you at the airport exit gate with a sign with your name on it.
Send an email with your flight number and your arrival time to [email protected] to arrange this.
PROS: The driver will wait even in case of flight delays.
It’s the most secure way to ensure you will get to Monteverde.
CONS: It can be a bit expensive if it is just for 1 or 2 people (it normally costs $180 cash for up to 5 people).
