Explore Monteverde at Night in Monteverde

The Monteverde Night Tour is a 2-hour guided tour at night in the Monteverde forest in Costa Rica. We take small groups of tourists into the woods at night with flashlights and a tour guide searching for nocturnal animals.

We run these Monteverde Night Tours twice per night, at 6 pm and 8 pm. Each night tour takes about 2 hours, and we go on foot, but it’s a light walk with multiple stops as we find animals.

The activity is low-intensity, suitable for ages 6+.

Discover the Creatures of the Night at the Monteverde Night Tour

You might have visited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and wondered why you did not see many animals. That is one of the most frequently asked questions from people who visit the park, and it makes a lot of sense. After all, many people travel to Monteverde to see wildlife.

Monteverde is home to 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, 120 reptilian and amphibian species, and thousands of insects. However, more than 80% of wildlife in Monteverde is active during the night, not during the day, which is why it’s tough to see animals during the daytime.

When the sunsets, these animals come out in search of food and shelter to spend the night.
With the help of a local tour guide and flashlights, it’s relatively easy to find some of these species in the forest.

See a Variety of Nocturnal Animals in a Monteverde Night Tour

People often ask us, “What kind of animals do you see in a night tour in Monteverde?”

As a general rule, you can see up to five species of mammals, between one and three species of reptiles and amphibians, between one and five species of birds, and many species of insects. The most popular types of mammals you can see on a night tour include monkeys, agoutis, coatis, sloths, and kinkajous. You can also find the fantastic red-eyed frog, a beautiful frog species considered one of the most amazing animals in Costa Rica.

On a Monteverde Night Tour, the most popular bird species we regularly see include toucans, Mot-mots, and sometimes even the impressive resplendent Quetzal. During the night tour, these species will be asleep, so you will not see them actively moving, but instead, you will see them sleeping on a tree.

On the insect’s realm, you will typically see a lot of types in a Monteverde Night Tour, including Walking Sticks (impressive insects that resemble a 5 to 12-inch stick), as well as Tarantulas and Scorpions. Don’t worry, though; our guides are well-trained to ensure safety goes first. We will never expose you to these creatures in an unsafe manner. We will show them to you at a prudent distance avoiding contact with them.

Another stunning creature of the night we regularly see on a Monteverde Night Tour is a famous snake we call the Green Vipper, a beautiful poisonous snake that comes out at night to prey on birds and other smaller animals. If you’re lucky, you might even see it hunting (or even ingesting) a small animal.

Every night is different, and with nature, there is never a guarantee of what you will see on your Monteverde Night Tour, but we typically see the above types of animals to a degree.

Monteverde Night Tour Reviews

Phenomenal Experience Monteverde Night Tour

We did the Monteverde Night Tour, and our experience was phenomenal. The Guide knew so much about the animals, wildlife, and intent behind conservation. We saw many red-eyed tree frogs (at least 8) and many other critters. The walk was not challenging but still lasted about an hour and a half. The time flew by.

Loved the Night Walk Monteverde Night Tour

I would highly recommend the Monteverde Night Tour if you like nature. I loved the night walk I took with the local guide assigned to us. We saw many night insects, a tucan sleeping, tiny frogs, and even a snake. It was a wonderful two-hour night walk. Make sure you wear extra layers and bring a raincoat, just in case.

Amazing Night Tour Monteverde Night Tour

We did a night tour, and it was amazing! It was very different from our previous expeditions, and we were lucky as we saw three sloths (including a baby), frogs, bats, birds, vipers, and lots of bugs. Being out at night seeing the nocturnal animals was so cool as many stayed hidden throughout the day, and we would not have seen them otherwise.
