The Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour features the healthiest, calmest, and best-trained horses in Monteverde, Costa Rica, which is an incredible asset when riding on a landscape as challenging and varied as it is in this region of the country.

Horse Trek is also the oldest horseback riding tour operator in the area, with two decades taking visitors to explore the outskirts of Monteverde, with an excellent reputation for their quality of horses, which is vitally important to ensure things go well and safe. Visitors are also required to wear helmets, which is one of the main reasons people choose this company. All horses are ultimately unpredictable, no matter how well-trained they are, so a requirement to use helmets has contributed to keeping up their reputation.

In the past, the Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour mainly was on roads rather than trails. For the most part, there was little traffic, but cars were passing by several times relatively close, so in recent years, the company partnered with a vast cattle property to use this landscape to run their tours. Since this change took place, their reputation has been on a spike. Now, this tour is among the top horseback riding tours in the area.

At Horse Trek, you will first meet your tour guide, who will inquire about your previous experience with horseback riding. Next, you will meet various horses. You will see how they trained their horses and how to direct them according to that training. Then, your tour guide will assign a horse that will match your expertise level, and you will go on an excellent tour around the hills surrounding Santa Elena throughout a private ranch. You will go up and down through very steep hills, where your easy-to-ride horse will come in handy, and you will be following your tour guide, visiting a multitude of different landscapes around the ranch. In the end, depending on how comfortable you are with your horse, your tour guide might let you do some trotting and cantering, which can be incredibly exhilarating.

The Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour is $30 for residents (all ages), $25 for foreign kids (5-9 years old), and $40 for foreign adults (10 and up). These rates include transportation both ways, but they do not include taxes. All in all, this is considered by many a magical experience that is well underpriced for what you get.

How to Get There

The Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour takes place at the Horse Trek private ranch, a location that can be tricky to reach, especially during the rainy season that goes from May through November when the road can be in poor conditions. The tour includes transportation, so the recommendation is to use that transportation rather than drive to the ranch whenever possible.

Additional Information

The Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour is suitable for ages 12+ except for people with disabilities, extreme weight excess, or pregnancy. Insurance and safety measures are in place to ensure things go well.

Exhilarating Ride! Horse Trek Monteverde

Horse Trek was a wonderful experience. Marvin is a skilled rider and trainer and allowed us to bind with our horses before getting underway. The scenery was incredible, and we even had a hike mid-ride to let the horses rest, and this was a welcome chance to stretch our legs a little.

Spectacular! Horse Trek Monteverde

The Horse Trek Horseback Riding Tour has spectacular views from some fantastic trails! Marvin has a passion for his horses as well as his riders. My 13-year-old granddaughter & I had an excellent 2-hour ride with a 20-minute hike in pristine surroundings as a bonus.

Amazing Experience Horse Trek Monteverde

What a fantastic experience. The horses were great, the landscape was incredible, moving the cattle was great, and Jackie, the cattle dog, was excellent. Marvin, the tour guide, was terrific, local knowledge, loved what he did. I had a good laugh, and the whole adventure was great.
